Good news! The photo you see is Lucas test driving his car seat. He is now feeding 100% on the bottle/breast and the doctors think if everything goes well he might (might!) go home tomorrow night! Stay tunned.
More progress being made. Lucas increased the frequency of feeds from the bottle/breast. He went from 1 out of 2, to 2 out of 3. One step closer to coming home!
While no one was looking, Lucas was quick on the trigger and removed his gavage tube. After all, who wants a tube going up your nose?! Before the nurse could replace it, mommy was quick with the camera to take the above pic.
Several interesting developments in the last few days. First, you might have noticed in today's picture that he has been upgraded from the previous high-tech isolette (see post of Oct 25th) to a basic crib. This means that he is now able to maintain his body temperature without any help! The second important achievement is that Lucas managed this morning to take his entire feeding through the breast! A whopping 42ml. The doctors are gradually increasing the frequency of breast feedings (we're at 2 a day) since it takes a lot of energy to suck a breast! Once he is able to take all feedings via breast or bottle (8/day), he can finally come home. Though the doctors don't give any predictions, we are hoping to have the entire family home by Thanksgiving.
Lucas waves to his blog fans. Yesterday, after several days of "practicing", Lucas successfully breast fed for the first time. He only managed to take half of his feeding, but it was a great start!
Lucas experimented with bottle feeding for the first time today. Quite a big step in his development. The coordination to suck, swallow, and breathe is quite challenging for premies. Gradually he will be moving away from receiving his food through the tube (gavage) and more towards breast and bottle feeding. This is one of the basic conditions for him to finally go home.
